Principal’s Message

Good luck to Katie Hahm and Matthew Campbell in the State Science Fair this weekend. This is a BIG event.  Only 3 students from the Junior High Division are chosen to represent our region (out of 400 students).  The fact that St. James has 2 students going to this event, is GREAT for St. James.  They will compete on Saturday at DePauw University.

Retirement Open House—-May 17

A retirement open house for Mrs. Dietel will be on Saturday, May 17th in the St. James cafeteria from 2-4pm.  Please put this on your calendar and make plans to celebrate this very special day with Mrs. Dietel and her family.

SOCIAL STUDIES FAIR

The Social Studies Fair will be held in the cafeteria on Wednesday, April 9th from 6:30-7:30 p.m.. All first, third, fifth, and seventh grade students are required to participate. (Students in second, forth, sixth, and eighth may participate if they choose to create their own project. Please let your homeroom teacher know by Friday, April 4th if you plan to participate.) Even if you are a family whose child does not have a project in the Social Studies Fair, please join us for an educational and fun evening.

Chapel Offerings

Chapel offerings for the month of April will be given to Camp Lutherhaven. Many children from our church and school attend this camp over the summer. Watch for offering envelopes coming home on Tuesdays.

March Advertising (St. James Lutheran School)

Parents, put out your yard signs advertising St. James Lutheran School. New ones are being ordered. We are proud of our school, students, parents, teachers, and support staff. March is designated as the month to get the word out about St. James School. We provide an excellent Christian education program. We desire all of the children of our church and surrounding community to attend. Help us by passing out the word about St. James.

School Pre-Registration is Now!

We have a wonderful staff and facility. Yes, the facility is old and  historic, but it is solidly built. The foundation we offer our students is also solid because it is based on Christ. We have a caring atmosphere that permeates through from student to student and teacher to student. Please consider St. James Lutheran School for your children’s education. Forms have been sent home with your children. If you did not receive one or you lost it, please pick one up from the school office.

Fifth Grade News

5th Grade Memory: Memory for Friday will be the 6th Petition of the Lord's Prayer.

Welcome back from spring back.  I hope and pray everyone had a joyous and blessed Easter.  This week we will finish the biography posters and start our historical narratives.  Next Wednesday, April 9th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. is the Social Studies Fair.  The students will be required to be there to explain their projects.  I would like for them to dress as their historical figure.  Please do not go to any expense.  If you have extra of these types of costumes please let me know so I can help make arrangements for everyone.  You can use Feast of the Hunter Moon costumes if appropriate.  This week we will work on presenting ourselves as our historical figure.  Have a great week.  Mrs. Bunch

 News from Mrs. Thibodeau

Welcome back! I hope all of you had a blessed Easter break.

Literature:

For the next 5 weeks, I am offering the 6th – 8th graders a choice in literature options. Reading for both options will begin on Wednesday, April 2nd, and finish on Friday, May 9th.

(1) The first option is an independent reading unit. This is a program designed for students who want to choose their own novel and work at their own pace. Assignments and due dates are specifically laid out ahead of time. Parents and students must sign an agreement before the student can participate in IRU.

(2) The second option it to read 5 or 6 selections from resources in the classroom. These selections will include pieces from the literature textbook and the Holt Reader, as well as poetry and plays. This week for those choosing option #2:

6th “Medusa’s Head”, retold by Olivia Coolridge

7th “King Arthur: The Sword in the Stone” by Hudson Talbott

8th“The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe

 Writing:

Last quarter, I gave the students in 6th – 8th an essay question each Friday, and they were required to write a paragraph in response to that question. We covered different types of paragraphs: descriptive, informative, narrative, compare/contrast, cause/effect and persuasive. I feel these essay question responses are excellent training for writing longer papers in their secondary education, and will be continuing this weekly exercise.

Vocabulary: Test 4/4

Suffixes, “It’s Like” – al, - ine, - ous

6thautumnal, elephantine, malicious, phenomenal, political, pristine, saccharine, serpentine, slanderous, voracious

7thcerebral, decimal, feminine, gracious, gradual, infamous, manual, obnoxious, rapacious, tedious

8thcovetous, fortuitous, intellectual, mysterious, optional, porcine, pugnacious, superficial, tortuous, vicarious

Have a wonderful week!

Your sister in Christ,

Sandra Thibodeau
