About Us

Lutheran missionaries began their work in Lafayette in 1848.  The formal organization of the church and school was on September 29, 1850. Rev. David R. French currently serves as Senior Pastor and Rev. Peter Heckert serves as Associate Pastor. St James was originally located on Ferry Street near 9th Street.  Growth of the congregation led to its present location at 800 Cincinnati Street in 1884.  Our school was constructed in 1914 with additions coming in 1965 (cafeteria and library), 1983 (gymnasium) and 1996 (church office and fellowship hall).

St. James is a member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod and is committed to the teaching and proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  A broad range of ministries are offered at St. James from preschool to Vacation Bible School and music camps. Our food pantry serves over 10,000 people each year. Our offerings to District and Synod, with other LC-MS congregations, help fund foreign missions around the world.

St. James is home to many hundreds of families in Lafayette and the surrounding communities, and our current professional staff includes: two pastors, a business manager, two secretaries, a director of early childhood education, a principal, nine teachers, a music director, an athletic director, the Early Childhood and Daycare staff, and the custodial staff.

Three Divine Services are offered each weekend at St. James: Saturday at 6:00 p.m., Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. often with musical offerings of the St. James Adult Choir or one or our many children’s choirs. We offer adult Bible study and Sunday school each Sunday morning from 9:15–10:15.

We look forward to meeting you and, by God’s grace, walking with you to the cross of Jesus Christ and the eternal life He has won for all and freely offers to you. May God grant that St. James be for you what she has been for so many for over a century and a half, God’s house and your home.
