Blessings and Peace in Christ. St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church is a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS).  Membership at St. James Lutheran Church is based on your confession (agreement) with the teachings of the Lutheran Church as found in the Book of Concord (The Lutheran Confessions).  There are three ways to join St. James.

The first method is by baptism.  Children who are baptized are members of our congregation with the promise that their parents will teach their children to pray, put the Scriptures in their hands and bring them to the worship services of God’s people.  To assist parents with this responsibility St. James offers a Lutheran Day School (2 year old Preschool – 8th grade), Sunday school and weekly Bible studies.  Our children (by tradition) are confirmed at the end of eighth grade after a two year period of instruction with the pastor.  Junior confirmation is a rite of the church in which a young person confesses for themselves what their parents confessed for them at the time of their baptism. Adults who have not been baptized would first take instruction classes, be baptized and then make a confession of faith in the rite of adult confirmation.

The second method is by transfer.  This is when a member of another LCMS congregation who moves to this area requests a transfer of membership from their former congregation.  Instruction classes are helpful but not necessary.  Members of other Lutheran church bodies are required to take adult instruction.

The third method is affirmation of faith.  This is when a baptized adult from another church body takes instruction classes and is then given the opportunity to confess their agreement with what they have been taught and become members again through adult confirmation.

If you have any question regarding membership at St. James, please feel free to contact us via e-mail or phone. (office@stjameslaf.org or 765-423-1616)

St. James offers an adult information class called This is Most Certainly True.  All those who are beyond junior confirmation instruction age (older than 8th grade) and are interested in church membership at St. James, would like to learn more about the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, or would like to refresh their understanding of the Lutheran Christian faith are invited to come.  Classes are held on Sunday mornings at St. James from 10:00-11:00 a.m. (please check bulletin announcements for location within the church).  The class runs approximately every six months.
