The Lamb Pulpit Cloth

April 26, 2016
By Chris Rowan

The Lamb Pulpit Cloth:

"Worthy is the lamb who was slain." Once a year, and only for the Easter season, our altar is adorned with the gold and red embroidered ALLELUIA superfrontal, and from the pulpit hangs the EMBROIDERED LAMB antependia.  Certainly this set of creamy white paraments is one of the great treasures of our church and are used for the Easter season through the Feast of the Ascension.  White, as a liturgical color, symbolizes purity and eternity, perfection, celebration and joy.  We have two sets of white paraments, and the Altar Guild prefers to use the Alleluia set for Easter.  On Pentecost we will change to the red paraments, and then we will have the long season of green paraments.  The liturgical colors used for the altar paraments, the vestments, and banners have been standardized for the Western rite church since the 16th century.  Since the Lutheran Church is part of the Western rite, it usually follows the customary liturgical practices.  In 1570 the high festivals of Christmas and Easter were established as white.  Preparatory season of Advent and Lent were purple.  (Later in the 20th century blue became an alternate color for Advent).  Penitential days of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday were black.  Days of zeal, Pentecost, were red.  All other days were green.

Historic Altar Cloth

March 17, 2016
By Chris Rowan

Crown Detail Frontal

Beautiful, Purple Historic Altar Cloth:

One of our three historic embroidered altar cloths (called frontals as they hung in front of the alter) is now on display in the east lobby area (between the santuary and the fellowship hall).  The one on display has a beautiful crown embroidered on it, which is a sign of royalty and is used as a symbo for Christ, the King of Kings.  The royal crown also reminds us of the crown of thorns; both are strong Lenten symbols.

Besides this purple frontal, we have red and green ones.  These will be displayed during the appropriate seasons.  These three frontals were used during Fellowship Communion in the past, when the service was conducted from a small altar in the fellowship hall.  Matching antependia, lectern bands, were also used.  The colors correspont to three liturgical colors: purple for Lent and advent, red for Pentecost, and greeen for the of the year.  The Altar Guild is interested in knowing a bit more about these three frontals.
  • Who made them?  Are they hand-embroidered
  • Why don't we have a white one for Easter and Christmas seasons?
  • Can anyone describe or tell us about Fellowship Communion when it was held in teh fellowship hall?

Fellowship Communion service is currently held in the sanctuary on the last Wednesday of the month at 10:30 in the morning.  The next two are March 30 and April 27.  A light lunch follows the service.

If you have any information that may help us with this please email us at the church
