Part 1: Care and Concern


Food Pantry Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help in the Food Pantry by collecting and sorting food from the supply center and distributing food items on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to people in need.
  • Time Commitment: Volunteers are needed once a week.

Funeral Dinners

  • Description: Volunteers will be asked to donate food items and drop them off in the fellowship hall. The goal is to provide a light meal for grieving families in their time of need. We serve sandwiches, chips, salads, fruit and veggies, cookies, and a drink. These items can be homemade or bought.
  • Time Commitment: Assistance is needed approximately once a month.

Life-Issues Group

  • Description: This group seeks to educate our congregation and equip them to support Pro-Life efforts in our community. To be added to the list or to request more information about opportunities to help, please contact Karin Crum.

Lutheran Women in Mission League (LWML)

  • Description: This group is for women who are finding avenues to use their God-given talents as they meet the challenges to share the Gospel message. It is composed of individual women and women’s groups within congregations of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, on campuses, in resident homes, or in other settings. It has as its “mission heart” thousands of volunteers who are daily dedicating their lives to making a difference in this world. All women of St. James are members of LWML. Our activities/ministries include mite offerings, confirmand prayer pals, Fall Fine Arts & Crafts Show, Christmas Cookie Walk, Women’s Christmas Dinner, Spring Mother/Daughter Tea, and many others! Prayer Chain

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to pray for members of the congregation who submit requests and/or to also pass on the request to other members of the Prayer Chain. The Prayer Chain has two sources: e-mail and phone. E-mails are sent “blind copy.”
  • Time Commitment: Prayer Chain members commit to praying as requests are received.

Quilters

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the creation of special tied or knotted quilts for distribution to Lutheran World Relief and to those in our community who would benefit from these quilts. Little quilting skill is necessary.
  • Time Commitment: St. James Quilting Circle members meet on the fourth Monday of each month, 8:30 a.m. – noon.

Sewing Circle

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the creation of special clothes for babies who have passed away and joined God in heaven.
  • Time Commitment: St. James Sewing Circle members meet on the third Monday of each month, 8:30 a.m. – noon.

Part 2: Worship Assistance


Altar Guild

  • Description: All communicant women at St. James are invited to be members of the Altar Guild. The officers of the Guild include: President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer, all serving two year terms. Since the Guild needs between 25 and 50 members, new members are always welcome. Working with the pastors, Guild members are responsible for setting up the altar for weekly worship services by changing the paraments to the appropriate color for the season, preparing the Communion ware, filling the candles, setting out the flowers, and cleaning up after the services. The Guild also decorates the sanctuary for festivals such as Advent and Christmas by putting up special candles and wreath, setting out the crèche, and decorating the Christmas tree with Chrismons.
  • Time Commitment: Approximately one hour on Saturdays during one month of the year. The members of the Guild are divided into twelve teams with each team consisting of two to four members responsible for the duties for one month. Each team can divide the work to fit their schedules; some teams do this by assigning one weekend to each member, others work together every Saturday. The Guild also meets as a whole group twice a year, on the fourth Mondays of April and October, at 6:00 p.m. for a light, carry-in supper and business meeting.

Audio and Visual Technician

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help set up, run, and maintain the sound and video equipment for services and other church and school activities.
  • Time Commitment: Audio and visual technicians are needed once a week.

Christmas Eve Worship Assistant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the setup and cleanup of the 4:30 p.m. Christmas Eve worship service. Work will include setting up and taking down the background for the play, the chairs for the worshipers, and the temporary stable for the animals; setting up spotlights and microphones for the worship service; and setting up and returning area rugs.
  • Time Commitment: Volunteers are needed for 1-2 hours during the week before Christmas Eve to help set up for the worship service and 1-2 hours after the worship service to clean up.

Christmas Eve Worship Participant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to serve as actors and actresses for the 4:30 p.m. Christmas Eve worship service. Volunteers can decide between roles with or without speaking parts.
  • Time Commitment: Volunteers are needed for 1-2 hours before the Christmas Eve service begins and 1 hour during the service to help re-create the Christmas story for worshipers.

Fellowship Time Assistant

  • Description: Volunteers assist with the preparation, distribution, and cleanup of donuts and coffee during the Adult Education/Sunday school hour.
  • Time Commitment: Fellowship assistants are needed on Sunday mornings. Each team will coordinate to serve about once a month.

Greeter

  • Description: The purpose of a greeter is to welcome members and visitors to our worship services, where they will receive the Gospel message. We want all those who attend our services to feel welcome and comfortable as they hear God’s Word.
  • Time Commitment: Greeters are assigned to a service once or more a month (depending on the total number of greeters available for scheduling).

Nursery Attendant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to work in the nursery and provide an environment for children to play/relax while parents attend the worship service.
  • Time Commitment: Nursery attendants are assigned to the nursery during worship every 1-2 months.

Parish Fellowship Committee

  • Description: The basic objectives of this committee are the strengthening of the fellowship between congregation members spiritually and socially; the integration of new members into the life of the congregation; and the general up-building of mutual cooperation, trust, and enjoyment among the members of the congregation. Activities: That the objectives of this committee may be carried out, the committee, either corporately or through specifically designated individuals, will:
  1. Plan, supervise, and implement larger gatherings of the congregation from time to time through the year that will further the goals of the congregation.
  2. Maintain an adequate group of willing workers who will help to plan, coordinate, and execute the work necessary to successfully accomplish fellowship goals.
  3. Provide for the integration of new members and their families into the congregation.
  4. Submit an annual budget request in the form and at the time requested by the Board of Stewardship.
  5. Provide a general atmosphere of friendliness among the members on a smaller scale by suggesting to groups, societies, and Bible classes, ways of bringing their members into meaningful personal relationships.

Usher

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help distribute bulletins, collect offerings, assist during Holy Communion, count the number who attend worship services, and facilitate dismissal after the services.
  • Time Commitment: Ushers are assigned to a service once or more a month (depending on the total number of ushers available for scheduling).

Part 3: Music Opportunities


Adult Choir

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to come and offer up their voices as a musical offering to the Lord. The St. James Adult Choir provides an opportunity for adults to sing a variety of pieces during worship services and other special occasions.
  • Time Commitment: Adult Choir members rehearse Thursday evenings and sing approximately one weekend a month in the worship services and during special church holidays and festivals.

Adult Handbell Choir

  • Description: The St. James Handbell Choir is a unique ensemble of musicians high school age and older. The choir uses a three-octave set of Schulmerich handbells as well as three octaves of Malmark handchimes. The repertoire includes hymn accompaniments and descants as well as longer stand-alone works based on familiar melodies.
  • Time Commitment: Only minimal music reading skills are necessary, but regular attendance at weekly rehearsals is required.

Instrumentalist / Accompanist

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to come and offer up their talents as a musical offering to the Lord. St. James is always looking for individuals who play brass, wind, string, or other instruments to enhance the musical offerings within the worship service and other special events.
  • Time Commitment: Instrumentalists and accompanists rehearse once a week and occasionally play in weekend worship services and at special church holidays and festivals.

Part 4: Church Help


Adult Bible Study Leader

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to facilitate Bible studies and other lesson topics for adults on Sunday mornings.
  • Time Commitment: Adult Bible study leaders are needed quarterly.

Bulletin Assembler

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help assemble worship bulletins for the congregation to use during our weekend services.
  • Time Commitment: Bulletins are assembled each week on Friday at 1:15 p.m. for approximately 1 hour.

Office Helper

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to occasionally answer the phone and the door in the church office while our secretary is away from the office due to an illness, conference, or personal matters.
  • Time Commitment: Four hours to fill in for a half day or nine hours to fill in for a full day, on an as-needed basis.

Outside Groundskeeper or Inside Handyman

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with general maintenance and upkeep of the grounds that surround our facilities. General inside upkeep includes tasks such as replacing ceiling tiles, fixing leaky faucets or stuck handles on toilets, etc.
  • Time Commitment: Once a month.

Picture Directory Volunteer

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help with the development and creation of the congregational picture directory. The directory is done every three to five years.
  • Time Commitment: 1-2 hours a month for 3 months.

Sanctuary Upkeep Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the cleaning of the pews and other woodwork and other general maintenance in the sanctuary.
  • Time Commitment: Once a month.

Sunday School Assistant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to distribute and gather attendance sheets on Sunday mornings, choose Sunday school supplies and curriculum needs, distribute Sunday school attendance rewards, gather offerings for Sunday school, and assist people with questions about the Sunday school program.
  • Time Commitment: Once a week.

Sunday School Teacher

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help share the message of Jesus Christ to Sunday school children ages 2 to 8th grade.
  • Time Commitment: Once a week.

Vacation Bible School Staff

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help with the preparation and facilitation of Vacation Bible School by working on crafts, music, games, snacks, Bible storytelling, mission focus, openings, and so on.
  • Time Commitment: Vacation Bible School assistants are needed once a month before the program takes place and daily when the program is running.

Youth Group Assistant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the activities of the Junior High Youth Group and the Senior High Youth Group. Volunteers will be given the opportunity to participate, interact, and assist in all monthly activities of the groups.
  • Time Commitment: Once or twice a month for each group.

Part 5: School Help


Auction Committee Member

  • Description: This annual event helps raise awareness of our day school and money for tuition assistance and the enrichment of our school.
  • Time Commitment: The core committee meets monthly, late summer through December. From January until the program’s event date, the committee meets bi-monthly or weekly.

Book Fair Assistant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the Scholastic Book Fair at St. James Lutheran School. Volunteers set up, assist shoppers, collect money, and take down the book fair once it ends.
  • Time Commitment: Book Fair assistants are needed once a day while the fair is taking place.

Library Assistant

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with checking in and checking out books in the school library.
  • Time Commitment: At least one day a week.

School Carnival Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to help with the development and implementation of the St. James School Carnival in the fall.
  • Time Commitment: The St. James School Carnival Committee meets once a month.

Substitute Teacher

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to occasionally substitute as a teacher at St. James Lutheran School while full-time teachers are away from their classrooms due to illness, conferences, or personal matters.
  • Time Commitment: Substitute school teachers are contacted when a teacher needs to be away from his/her classroom.

Substitute Teacher’s Aide

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist teachers in their classrooms at St. James Lutheran School.
  • Time Commitment: Substitute school teacher’s aides are utilized periodically when teachers need additional help in the classrooms.

Substitute Kitchen Helper

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to occasionally assist with meal preparation for the students of St. James Lutheran School.
  • Time Commitment: Substitute kitchen helpers are called on periodically when the head cook is in need of additional help in the kitchen.

Part 6: Athletic Department Help


Concession Stand Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist at the concession stand during all St James sporting events held in the gym. Workers will collect money and distribute food and drink items to fans attending the games.
  • Time Commitment: Concession stand workers need to arrive 30 minutes before the first event and usually work a shift of two games for a total commitment of about 2½ hours. Workers close the stand toward the end of the last game, allowing time for cleanup of the equipment and floor.

Score Table Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist at the score table during all St. James sporting events held in the gym. Workers will be asked to run the clock, keep stats, or keep score during the game.
  • Time Commitment: Scoring table volunteers need to arrive 30 minutes before the first event and usually work two games for a total commitment of about 2½ hours.

Gate Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist at the gate during all St. James sporting events held in the gym. Workers will collect money and distribute tickets, if any, to fans who attend.
  • Time Commitment: Gate workers arrive 45 minutes before game time. They usually work a shift of two games, closing the gate during the second half of the last game. Usually a minimum 2-hour shift.

Tournament Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the annual St. James tournaments for girls volleyball, girls basketball, and boys basketball. Workers are needed for the gate, concessions, score table, crowd control, set up, and clean up.
  • Time Commitment: Varies by duty. Usually workers will be assigned shifts of 2-3 hours. Workers should be at their posts 30 minutes before their shift begins if it is the first shift; otherwise, arrive 15 minutes early for a smooth transition.

Track Meet Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the St. James Track and Field Day and during the city track meet, both of which are held at Jefferson High School. Fill-in help may be needed for other meets during the spring. Duties include helping with running and field events by keeping times and distances thrown or jumped.
  • Time Commitment: Time varies. Volunteers for any track and field event need to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the event. Events are staggered; therefore, plan to work through the entire event that was assigned.

Fish Fry Worker

  • Description: Volunteers are needed to assist with the annual St. James Lutheran School Athletic Department Fish & Tenderloin Fry fundraiser. You can assist by donating supplies such as utensils, napkins, plates, cups, and various food and drink items. Workers are also needed to set up, batter the fish, sell tickets, collect money, distribute and serve food/drinks, and clean up.
  • Time Commitment: Volunteers are assigned shifts to work in the various positions. Setup and fish battering will start in the early afternoon the day of the event.
