2nd Grade News
October 22, 2018
Report cards for the 1st quarter will be emailed and sent home on Tuesday. Parent/Teacher conferences are this week on Wednesday, October 24 and Thursday, October 25. I look forward to meeting with you this week and sharing your second grader's growth this school year.
In second grade, we have a goal of reading and passing 500 AR quizzes. Our current total is 227 quizzes! BZZZZZ . . . You're sharp, second graders!
Please remember to check the home binder, ClassDojo chart, and sign the student planner nightly. Please don't hesitate to send a Dojo message, email, call, or stop in the classroom if you have any questions.
Dates for your Calendar:
Wednesday, October 24 and Thursday, October 25: Parent/Teacher Conferences from 3:20-8:00.
Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30: NO SCHOOL; Teacher's Conference in Indianapolis
October 8-November 2: Operation Christmas Child Collection; Each class at St. James Lutheran School is packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, boxes for boys and boxes for girls (target ages 5-9 in second grade). Items for the Operation Christmas Child box (shoebox size) need to be donated by Friday, November 2. Our goal in second grade is 3 boy boxes and 3 girl boxes. If we collect more items than our boxes can hold, we can pack more boxes. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
Thursday, November 1: Second Grade Fall Party. More details coming soon!
Thursday, November 8: Tippecanoe County Public Library Author Visit: Margery Cuyler. We will leave St. James at 12:30 and return at approximately 2:30. We will need a couple of parent chaperones to walk with us to the library. A field trip permission slip will be coming home soon. Please let me know if you would be available to walk with us to the library.
Monday, November 12: Purdue Convocation "Danny Carmo's Mathematical Mysteries" with 3rd grade. We will leave St. James at 9:00A.M. and travel in a LSC bus. The convocation is at 10:00 A.M. We will return to St. James by 11:30 A.M. One parent chaperone will be needed for the field trip. More information coming home soon!

Religion: Martin Luther and Reformation
Reading: The Bremen Town Musicians (story) pg. 284-301; Second graders will bring their reading anthologies home on Wednesday and Thursday nights to reread the story of the week that has already been read in class.
High Frequency Words: bought, people, pleasant, probably, scared, shall, sign
Vocabulary Words: partnership, survival, struggle, familiar, solution, miserable, depend, insist
Spelling: The second graders will have a pre-test on Monday and a post-test on Friday. If all of the twelve spelling words are spelled correctly on Monday, he or she will only spell the challenge words on Friday. The spelling words for this week are plurals: lunch, lunches, story, stories, tune, tunes, switch, switches, baby, babies, note, notes. The challenge words are: bought, people, pleasant.

Math: Chapter 4 2-Digit Addition ***Helpful vocabulary tip as we begin 2-digit addition followed by subtraction: "carrying" and "borrowing" is called "regrouping" in second grade math.***
